"Third Reich" is a nickname for the regime. "Reich" is a German word that is somewhat difficult to translate into English; it basically means "realm" or "nation", but can also have connotations of "empire". The idea was that the Third Reich was the third great empire in German history- the first was the Holy Roman Empire, the second was the German Empire from 1871 until 1918.

The official name of Hitler's regime was the "Großdeutsches Reich" ("Great German Realm"); the previous Weimar Republic's official name was "Deutsches Reich" ("German Realm").
