Who was Erwin Rommel?Erwin Rommel (15 Novemver 1891 - 14 October 1944) was a German general who rose to fame as commander of the Axis forces fighting the British in North Africa (1941-43). A clever tactician who used his numerically inferior forces to such great advantage that his reputation became a threat to Allied morale. Finally overwhelmed by superior numbers, he returned to Europe where he was put in charge of organising the defence of the French coast (so-called "Atlantic Wall") prior to the Normandy landings in June 1944. Badly wounded by an air attack on his staff car, he returned to Germany. Implicated in the July (1944) plot to assassinate Hitler but was so popular that he was not put on trial. Instead was given the option of committing suicide which he took in order that his family would not be harmed. Buried with full military honours (it was said that he had died of his wounds). His son later became Mayor of Stuttgart in post-war Germany. lie he comited sucide on 10/14/1944 because he didn't want to go though his trial. btw Vincent wrote this.A German general.

No he was not, but he did get awarded the navy cross which is the secord highest medal in the navy. Sincerly Reaper7924 To make it confusing, when Miller was awarded the Navy Cross it was the third highest decoration. The Distinguished Service Cross was second. After WWII the order was changed. Some historians contend that had Miller been white, he would have been awarded the Medal of Honor.

After a few battles between German General Rommel and British General Auchinleck, the latter commander issued an order to his commanders to avoid the use of the name "Rommel". Auchinleck's order suggested the the name of Rommel be replaced with "the Germans", " the Axis powers" or "the enemy".General Auchinleck was seeking to avoid having his enemy adversary become a "cult of personality".
687 Pour le Merites were awarded during WW1. Many of the winners were killed during the war. The link below has a list of the winners. In order to find out if they survived the war, you will need to search German archives for details. Listing all their names is beyond the scope of this site.
The Blue Max was the Prussian Order Pour Le Merite. it has not been awarded to servicemen- and was restricted to Commissioned officers- since World War I. The order was NOT restricted to the Luftwaffe, as the movie seems to imply ( I am referring to the George Peppard film) name derives from German ace Max Immelmann, who did not survive the war. Rommel ( Army) and several submarine commanders did receive the award in World War I. there were tonnage priority lists for the Submariners- so many thousands of tons of confirmed sinkings were in effect merit points. for the Luftwaffe- Twenty confirmed kills for fighter pilots ( an allied Ace only required 5 confirmed downings of enemy craft) Ace is not, of course an award or military rank. the Blue Max was a high decoration. the badge took the form of a Maltese Cross- with the motto Pour le merite- For the Merit, and four Eagles in the interstices.(regardless of service branch). there you have it. do NOT confuse with Iron Cross which in World War I was a minor decoration. both have Maltese cross -eight point, design.
