Yes, at the end of the war. The three allied zones got independence as West Germany in 1955. The Russian zone was given home rule as East Germany in 1949 and the P of occupation, and Berlin which fell in the middle of the USSR Zone was further divided into separate zones of influence. The individuals who found themselves under the USSR's control may have had the most difficult adjustment problems simply because plunder was well established and much of the German infrastructure was ripped out and shipped to the Eastolish zone has been permanently incorporated into Poland.
