The U.S. entered WWI because of the Zimmerman Telegram. The Zimmerman Telegram was to be sent to the Mexican Government authorizing military action against the U.S., but was intercepted by British Intelligence. The German govenment promissed financial support, weapons, and all land that they lost to the U.S. (California, Teaxas, etc.) and 25% of all other lands conquered. Also in the telegram was a plan that would give Germans the right to operate out of Mexican water a naval campaign against American shipping. President Wilson had campaigned on a platform of keeping "Americas land, waters, and air free from any kind of enemy". This was a direct violation of this idea. He felt that to keep America safe he needed to enter the war to end it quickly. Many historians still believe that this Telegram could have been forged by the British military intellgence because at the time British armies were suffering defeats and were demanding the U.S. get involved.
