Germany's Schlieffen Plan was more sophisticated than the Allies as WW 1 began. The plan made use of interior lines between Russia and France. At first their army attacked France while Austria held the Russians at bay. Germany's plan was also to take advantage of Russia's huge size and its ability to not mobilize quickly. The Germans, hoping to defeat France first then planned on using its railway system to shift forces from the western front to the eastern front and defeat Russia.
