That is an interesting question requiring some background information. Just as in Germany, Italy was enthralled by a dictatorial regime. Hitler gained power in Germany and Mussolini usurped political power in Italy. Thus, Nazism land fascism became the order of the day. Most ordinary citizens had the good sense to keep their head down during those turbulent years.
The average soldier was just a regular guy trying to do his duty and obey the orders that came down from his political masters. So, technically, Italy was a member of the Axis powers and was therefore an enemy of the Allied powers.
But, the population as a whole in both countries, as well as Japan, were halfhearted in their support of their political masters and when things started to go south as the war progressed; the Italians, to their credit, threw off their political masters and revolted.
So, Italy was treated more as an ally after they strung up Mussolini.

∙ 14y agoNot exactly. Italy entered World War 2 as an Axis country in 1940. However, the Mussolini regime was overthrown and Italy was permitted to negotiate a surrender in 1943, whereas Germany and Japan were forced to surrender unconditionally in 1945. From 1943 to 1945 Italy was officially an Allied country at war with Germany, but Italy was devastated by three years of war and did little as one of the Allies.
