Sort of. John Higgins was an accountant. Some PR guy thought the name sounded outdoorsey and added the middle initial. The name was used on Sears sporting goods from 1908 until 1961.
The brand name, J. C. Higgins, was based on a real person, John Higgins, a Sears employee from 1898 until his retirement as head bookkeeper in 1930. Higgins died in 1950. His expertise in sporting goods or sports is unknown.

your shotgun was the first J C Higgins model offered in 1946 It was manufactured by Harrington & Richardson based on their Pre war model 120 bolt action repeating shotgun . The 583 1wasmade in Nov 1945 For Sears /High Standard. The early Pre model 10 JC Higgins are scarce in good and shootable condition. However the bolt action shotgun is an old fashion thing and there is very limited collector intrest in old Sears Guns but they are out there. I am one of the very few. and these really are real Sears guns as you will not find these guns with any other name on it It was Sears only product Sears actually owned the design . I have paid 150.00dollars for one in near new cond. These are intresting and unique guns and very good and effective shotguns. great guns from your Grandfathers day

They were distributed a lot by mail order catalog companies like Sears & Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, etc. They were also made in 20, 16, & 12 gauge models. your gun was known as the J C Higgins model 10 .A six shot bolt action repeating shotgun. Sears owned the patten right wich it bought from Harrington and & Richardson your shotgun is 12 gauge and manufactured in 1948 by High Standard .Sears owned all of High Standards Rifle and Shotgun manufacturing and all of the patten rights in those days. Your shotgun is real Sears product . They are one of the better bolt action shotguns out there. How ever Sears sold a lot of them they are quite common as far as old guns go in very good shape I have seen them sell for 150 bucks average value 100 dollars . What you have is fine old shotgun from granpa's day. They are usually very good guns
