According to Biblical accounts and other sources, his opponents among the Pharisees had turned many of the common citizens against Jesus through various falsehoods, and these were the mobs that sought his crucifixion. When the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate, sought a popular decision, these groups called out for Jesus to die. Many of the people who had followed and believed in Jesus were fearful to oppose the militant crowds. They would have been unable to stop the Romans in any event, as they were not a unified force within Jerusalem.

Mobs of people usually aren't gathered for a democratic vote of the "will of the people." They're usually there in response to some highly charged emotional issue of some kind. And much of the time, they're looking for some sort of satisfactory climax... and the spilling of blood is not out of the question as a fitting end to it all.
In the end... all the parties involved were guilty... as Peter attests:
"Therefore let all the House of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, WHOM YE HAVE CRUCIFIED, both Lord and Christ." (Acts 2:36)
Yet, for all that... Jesus Christ was not murdered by the will of the people or Roman officials... but according to the commandment of God.
