No- you did not have to fabulously rich to be president. It helps to have some money and the connections that money brings, but it is not really required. In fact, recent presidents Obama and Clinton had rather modest incomes before they became successful in politics. People who have the drive and ability to get elected usually have the ability to be quite successful in their jobs and so acquire a reasonable amount of money before they run for President.
