Was John Brown ever a slave?
He was an abonlitionist who raided Haper Ferry, Virginia in 1859
and was never a slave. He was born in Connecticut, aspired to be a
Congregational minister, was raised in Ohio, ran a tannery and
farmed in Pennsylvania, traded cattle, raised sheep, went bankrupt
and fathered 21 children. Some consider him to have been a martyr
to the abolitionist cause while others considered him to be a
madman. Lincoln called him a "misguided fanatic".
