Mary I of Scots was indeed hated by the public for many factors:
1. After the death of her first husband, she married her first cousin Henry Stuart against all.
2. He was killed soon after their marriage for which she had allegations.
3. Then she married James Hepburn who was believed to be Henry's murderer.
4. She was then forced to abdicate the throne in sheer disrespect.
5. Then she was said to have tried to kill Queen Elizabeth I (her father's first cousin and her captor) in lure of freedom, for which she was tried and executed.
So, all reasons for the general mass to hate her.
