Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot to death, along with his wife, by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on the 28th June 1914. It was this assassination that is accepted as leading to the the first world war.

Assuming a typo. Nationalists are people who fanatically patriotic. They earn their bad name by "plowing over" everybody but their own country and taking the stance that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. There are less extreme nationalists, but the best example I can think of is Nazi (National-Socialist) party.
. A nation might turn to military leaders and Extreme Nationalists during a time of crisis because these leaders have a far greater sense of nationalism than government leaders or politicians. This sense of nationalism would inspire the people and make them far more likely to get through the crisis at hand.
1920's and 30's Europe was a powder-keg of extremist and revolutionary politics with extreme nationalists and communists quite often street-fighting for control. The moderate conservative and liberal establishment were simply very unpopular and corrupt. In most countries Nationalism and Fascism won over communism.
