"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree." (Acts 5.30.) "And we are witnesses of all things which he [Jesus] did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree" (Acts 10.39.) "And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre." (Acts 13.29.) "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness" (Peter 2.24.) Understand the 'hanging on a tree' may come in several forms. In the old west felons were hanged from a tree by a rope; in the 1st Cent. Romans hanged upon a 'cross' beamed tree; 3rd. cent. B.C. Assyrians impaled enemies on a sharpened stake diagonally buried into the ground, with the sharp end sticking up. What you need to pay attention to is the word 'crucifixion' which is a VERY specific Roman method of punishing prisoners to death. They had refined this type of punishment to an art and the 'Cross' beam hewn tree could be mass produced and re-used. This is the well documented tree of death - the death of the cross - upon which Jesus Christ the Son of God hung and bled and died in disgrace to bear the penalty of our (mankinds)sin. Gal. 3:13 explains this and it was an Old Testament (Jewish) penalty for sin: Deut. 21:23. For this reason when the Jewish people rejected Jesus Christ of Nazareth as their promised Messiah, they paid the crowd to cry out, 'crucify him, crucify him' John 19:6; 19:15, knowing his life would end on a Roman cross (The Jews, subject to the Roman Empire could not invoke the death penalty, but the Roman Governor could.

He was crucified onto a cross. If you have someone to check this you really should prove this for yourself.....it is provable and thereafter undeniable. Go back to the original greek and notice every time you see the word "stauros" which means stake......like a pole. I am almost certain you will not see the word "cruxia" which means cross, used even once. In fact if you will allow me another moment of your time, I would also suggest that the stake or pole method was by design. Having your hands nailed or tied up high like that is part of the torture intended for the victim to suffer. There legs would get so tired they would hang by there arms until their ribcage began to separate and there internal organs would crush on there lungs until they were just about to suffocate, and then they would have to stand on there legs to even get a breath of air. Which is why if they were not dead yet when the Sabbath was due to begin (at sundown, read it in your own Bible) their legs would be broken so they could not stand and would therefore suffocate rather quickly, allowing time to get the body in the ground before sundown. These are the events as described in the Bible. Furthermore the cross that was frequently used as a torturesome means of capital punishment began way earlier under the rule of Tammuz. the (supposed) son of Nimrod and Nimrods' mother Semiramis. For extra kicks you should check out one of the abominations God showed Ezekiel in particular, the one with the old women weeping for Tammuz. I picture all those poor uninformed people who hold their crosses and pray and cry and have no idea that in the Babylonian language the first letter of Tammuz name in capital looks just like our lower case "t" and they are doing the abomination God showed Ezekiel by worshipping this tiny pagan symbol that some cruel ruler of Babylon though it would be cool to kill people on a cross that looked just like the first letter of his name so that his name would be feared far and wide.

No one knows for sure... the Greek word stauros in The Bible can be translated either as a cross or a pole.

The general Christian translations are that it's a cross... others, such asJehovah's Witnesses, choose to translate it as a pole.

Potato/Potatoe... what matters is that He died for you.

Jesus Christ, the son of God was hanged on a stake, not on a cross.

First of all the cross is a pagan symbol used long ago before the birth and death of Jesus Christ. First Christians never used the cross, and they did not believe that Jesus died on such cross. "Christianity" started to use the cross to make the new religion more acceptable to pagans because pagans already used this symbol in their false worship.

The Greek word generally translated as "cross" is "stauros" and it literally means "an upright stake". Originally it did not have the meaning of a cross.

The Greek word used in several places, describing the instrument of Jesus' death is xy'lon. This word means "stick", "timber", "tree".

The Greek word in Galatians 3:13 is also stake, or a tree. So Jesus died on a beam, or a timber not on a cross.

Answer

Actually Jesus was crucified on a Cross. Period.

The term 'crucifixion' comes from the Latin 'Crux' or 'Crucis' meaning 'cross'. All Biblical evience points to Christ's crucifixion on a cross. The term used by Paul is the Greek 'stauros' meaning 'cross'. This is categorically fact as the term 'stauros' is used frequently in other writings of this period and always means 'cross'. If Paul had meant 'stake' he would have used 'monos stauros' which meant 'torture stake'. The context of the Greek makes this VERY clear. Sadly the answer above fails to look at the context of the Greek and seems to have been written without real understanding of this context and as if simply repeated verbatim after someone had erroneously told them this fallacy.

All historical, archaeological evience and tradition holds that Jesus was crucified on a cross-shaped Cross. In the first century the Cross symbol was already used as a symbol of Christianity, and by the start of the second century many of the Church Fathers (some of whom had known personally the disciples) wrote of the crucifixion - on a cross. Tertulian even wrote about early Christians 'making the sign of the Cross' as they prayed. The Roman catacombs show depictions of crucifixion - always on a cross - and they also show crosses carved into the walls as an aid to prayer.

Archaeology has proved that crosses were used by the Romans as a method of execution. Sometimes they were cross shaped and sometimes T-shaped. However archaeological finds in and around Jerusalem confirm that the favoured method of the Romans in Jerusalem was the cross-shaped Cross.

The only group who rejects the historical fact of the crucifixion is the Jehovah's Witnesses. This is despite the fact that originally the Cross was part of their badge of identification. However, as their theology has changed constantly since their foundation it wasn't until fairly recently that a leader in the Watchtower went against all historical, theological, archaeological an Biblical evidence by heretically declaring the Cross 'pagan' and thus the idea of the 'torture stake' emerged. However there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a stake was used. On the contrary, all evidence ponts to the Cross as the means of execution and means of humanity's reemption.
