Music was very popular in the 1980s with Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Hall and Oates being some of the biggest stars of the decade. MTV started in 1981 and was followed by many imitators (television shows that aired Music Videos), and eventually VH-1. Music in the 1980s got off to a horrible start on Dec. 8, 1980 when John Lennon was murdered by an insane fan, however, music of all types sold very well. Inspired by George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, and Jerry Lewis MDA telethons; concerts for important causes were very popular in the 1980s, such as Bob Geldolf Band Aids Ethiopia tribute concerts, farm aid, and Hands across America for the homeless.
