No, being in the Continental Army wasn't "cool" in any modern sense. The people who joined did so with great personal sacrifice. They left behind their families as well as their farms or other businesses. Although many of them knew how to use firearms and had served in local or state militias they had to learn to fight as a disciplined national unit; i.e., as soldiers.
Especially in its early days, the Continental Army was poorly provisioned because the fledgling Continental Congress didn't have the power to fund the war. General Washington and his officers continually struggled to provide for their men. Soldiers were often forced to live off the land plus requisitioning or even commandeering provisions from civilians. Many didn't have horses and thus had to travel on foot while carrying their equipment.
Weaponry consisted of firearms and ordnance, primarily cannons. Soldiers also carried knives, bayonets, and swords. The weapons were powerful but crude and could cause horrific injuries. Treatment was often as brutal as the injuries themselves. Doctors were only beginning to realize the need for proper sanitation; they had little in the way of sophisticated medicines and even less for anaesthesia.
Conditions gradually improved as the men became better-trained and help arrived from Europe. Still it was grim and costly for those involved. It was only their willingness to offer themselves in defense of the new United States that enabled the country to win its independence.
