For all practical purposes the United States was the first republican form of government in the modern world. Ancient republics in ancient Rome were nothing like the new federal government. In comparison to the monarchies or other forms of modern governments of the 18th century, the US republic gave Americans rights never seen in the 18th century. The current US Constitution is the oldest one in today's world.

America was, from its inception as an independent country, a republic. The United States is actually a Republic, properly speaking. Because the United States system of government receives its authority from the law and all functions of governance come from the law, it is Republic under contract with the will of its citizens.

Some people will say that the United States is a Democracy, but it is not a Democracy in the pure sense. A true Democracy is a government ruled by the will of the people regardless of what existing laws exist. A pure Democracy is a government system that operates without a centralized code of laws dictating what rights belong to the citizens and what rights, obligations and duties belong to the governing body. For example, laws are not passed by a ballot vote of every citizen, because the code of law (The Constitution) requires that the people be represented by a Congress and a Senate. This is the code that the people and the government must abide by. Therefore, you have a system of government dependent entirely on the rule of law and not merely the will of the people.

Definition: Republic (from the Latin res publica means "the thing belonging to the people") It is the code which belongs to the people, a contract if you will for government.

They are totally different and not comparable. The Roman Republic existed 2,400 to 1,800 years before the creation of the US. We are are talking about totally different eras and totally different societies and cultures. Also note that a Republic is a state not ruled by kings, emperors, princes, or dukes.
