On September 20, 1958, Dr. Martin Luther King was signing copies of his recently-published book "Stride Toward Freedom" at a Harlem bookstore when a 42-year-old black woman, Izola Ware Curry, plunged a 7-inch steel letter opener into Dr. King's chest. Curry was arrested at the scene, and was found to be carrying a loaded gun. One month later, on October 20, 1958, Curry was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and committed to Matteawan State Hospital for the criminally insane.
