Was there a fire brigade in Dewsbury before 1960 and where was it?

Yes there was a Fire station in Dewsbury before 1960. It was close to the Town Hall and in fact I seem to remember that the they may even have had offices in the twon Hall.
My father, Vernon Thornton served as an officer with the Dewsbury Fire Service during the war and it is possible he was attached to a group that specialised in chemical fires. This group I understand was sent around the country to deal to deal with these type of fires, up the coast to Sunderland and Newcastle and also to Coventry.
I would be intersted to find out more information about this group and particulaly the role that my father played.
