To wash a wedding dress at home, use a washer with a delicate cycle and do not "line" hang.
Run the washer through a wash cycle (no laundry, though) with very hot water and a cup of bleach. This should remove the mildew and odors from the washer. Just be sure to let it go through the entire wash and rinse cycle. Then leave the lid to the washer open to let it air dry.
Possible plugged pump.
The washer stopped working and wouldn't undulate during the wash cycle...
Stop the washer, set to drain and rinse. Start the full cycle wash over without soap.
If the soap is spilling out of the washer, then stop the wash cycle, set it to spin, and let it spin the soapy water out. Then reset the washer for a full wash and rinse cycle to get out all of the soap. If you set it for a rinse cycle only, it won't remove all of the suds, resulting in dingy laundry.
You can get a type of cleaner that you simply throw into your wash cycle and let the washer do the work. All you would have to do is put the cleaner in the washing machine without soap and turn on the cycle.

You should only fill a home wash machine almost to the top of opening. Leave enough room in the washer so that water can circulate around the machine with some ease. Front loading wash machines follow the same principle too.
Wash it in the washer on gentle cycle or hand wash it. If it is newer, you may fry it in a dryer, but you might prefer to line dry it as well, especially if it is wool.
