the sabbath is Saturday, the seventh day of the week, just like The Bible explains. Jesus, in the Bible sets aside this day as a day of rest. This day was "changed" by a Roman ruler by the name of Constantine. He wanted to pay homage to something or someone involving the sun, hence the word Sunday so he negotiated with some wayward Jews to change the Sabbath to Sunday, henceforth killing two birds with one stone. They decided to keep it a tradition and that's why uneducated Christians today keep Sunday as Sabbath. But even today most Jews keep Saturday Sabbath as they know it. We have not been excused from keeping Sabbath. The Bible states that none of God's word or commands will pass away until the second coming of Christ, and that means all of the Bible from the first page to the last, keep it, and if you already observe sabbath good, if you don't it'd be a good thing to start.

Some people still do. The "sabbath" is actually Saturday but when people do obey the Sabbath rule they do it on Sunday. Also notice how people pick and choose on what they will obey. For instance more people obey thou shalt not murder but will still commit adultery and they dishonor their parents. People just decide what they will obey. The Lord also says if you're heavy laden that He will give you rest - He doesn't say "but only if its on the sabbath day" ;)

AnswerExcellent question! This is a complex question and this is strictly only my opinion. The Bible was written thousands of years ago. Modernization of humans has come a long way and most of it isn't good. When life was slower people of the Christian faith did obey the Commandments and they did take Sabbath to heart. Sunday is a day of rest and still should be. Our world is so fast-paced and the way people have to work (shift-work, single parents, etc.) does not allow most Christians to take this time, but many try and quality of time with one's family is most important.

If we were to shut-down the stores on Sundays there would be a riot! While people enjoy browsing the malls they forget that everyone working there has families and guess what ... they're working! The greed, the powerful have taken so much away from us. Still, there are many Christians today that still try to hang onto the 10 Commandments and do the best they can. I'm sure when God created us He was well aware of where the world would end up. We can be what we want to be if we try hard enough and we don't have to follow the Pied Piper.

Things to PonderWhat does it mean to Obey the Sabbath? Does that mean do not work? What is work? Is driving a car work? If it is, then most churches would be pretty empty on a Saturday or Sunday. There was a time when they harnassed the horses on Saturday so they could drive to church on Sunday, because that would have been work. Christ plucked the grain in the field on a Sabbath and was condemned for it. But if working on a Sunday is the way that you can feed your family, is it right to deprive them of food? Is it wrong to be able to buy medicine, see a doctor, or just buy food on a Sunday?

If no one is supposed to work on a Sabbath, there are a lot of preachers that would have to change professions in order to support their families. My father was a minister. Sunday was his biggest work day.

Keeping the Sabbath is open to the interpretation of the individual. The key thing is to keep God in your heart, especially on the Sabbath. And never forget, the only interpretation that matters is the one that you reach with God. For he is the only one that can judge us.

Sabbath is unique to the Jews of the Levant and based upon their (Hebrew) calendar, which is entirely different from the Gregorian calendar we are using today.

Sabbath in the Gregorian calendar can fall on any day of evry week.

And Friday nightfall in the Levant can be noonday in other parts of the world. Trying to reconcile Jewish Sabbath today is almost impossible.

AnswerFrom a Christian perspective, we are not under law but under grace and so the sabbath law from Exodus is no longer relevant. In particular, the keeping of the sabbath was given particularly to the Jews as a sign of their separation from the other nations who did not serve the one and only God. So the sabbath commandment was never given to all mankind to be kept, unless they became proselytes (i.e. joined the Jewish faith).

It is also interesting to note that of the ten commandments, the keeping of the sabbath is the only one not mentioned in the New Testament as being for Christians to observe. The others, of course are to be kept by faith, and not in the sense of a legalistic, works based system, but in love.

The first church council in Jerusalem, presided over by James, in Acts 15, dealt specifically with the keeping of the law, which certainly included the sabbath. The decision made by the Christians was that the Gentile Christians (all non-Jews) were to do certain things. The sabbath was most certainly not one of them. This pattern has been followed ever since by Christians who have always met on the first day of the week, Sunday, chiefly because Jesus rose then.

Sometimes there is also confusion between the sabbath and Sunday. They are two different things. One belongs to the Old Testament or old covenant, the other to the new. One belongs to the law, one to the gospel. One relates to a religion of works, the other of grace.

What is meant by the statement the sabbath is made of man and not man for the sabbath?

Jesus said that in reply to some criticism about Him doing certain activities on the sabbath. The idea, as I understand it, is that the sabbath should be of benefit to humans (as in having a day of rest, from hard work), and not something harmful (as in not wanting to save somebody because it happens to be a sabbath and you are "supposed to rest").
