Almost all native American tribes waged war against other tribes competing for the same resources.
The Sioux in particular originated as a woodland tribe from the vicinity of Lake Superior, but spread South and West, and this expansion greatly accelerated once they acquired the horse.
Thru Minnesota into Wisconsin to the South, but most aggressively thru the Dakotas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.

Yes, for for years from 1864-68.
General Carleton and Kit Carson defeated them by waging a scorched earth campaign burning crops, houses, stores, and killing livestock. Starving most surrendered (about 9000, about 2000 remained free). The were forced to walk to Bosques Redondo, a desolate place in New Mexico. It was known as the Long Walk. An unknown died in the war. About 400 died on the trip. About 1/4 died in the camps of disease. The scandle of their treatment, the money wasted and the corruption of the military and officials led to them being allowed to return to their homeland. The goverment tried to force them to Oklahoma but their leaders said they would rather die. Because of the scandal and some sympathetic officials and because most of their land was not desired by white settlers they were given part of their traditional lands back.
Today there are 300,000 tribal members and the Navajo Nation is 27,000 sq miles, much of their traditional land, and which is the same as Holland and Belgium combined.
The Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe headed North to the Canadian refuge rather then to submit to the confines of reservation life.
