The Mughals though they were of Persian lineage, had never been Shi'ite. They can thus be classified as Sunni. Many of the Mughals also subscribed to Sufistic views. And Akbar even tried his hand at amalgamating Hindus and Muslims into a new religion. It has to be granted that the Mughal courts were knowingly or unknowingly instrumental in some religious reawakening among scholars and thinkers, especially sufi saints of India.

Umayyads was a tribe that came into power among Muslims thirty years after the demise of Prophet Muhammad. And in that time, the term sunni did not exist, though its background was prepared. However, the term shia existed then. During the ruling of the fourth caliph of sunni belief and first imam of shiite belief, Ali, there appeared rebels, so did the conflicts and wars. And those who supported Ali, were back then called shiites (party) of Ali, and those who supported Muawiya (the first king of Umayyad Dynasty) were called shiites of Muawiya. And sunnis did not and do not support Umayyad Dynasty. Thus, in its dictionary meaning, sunnis are also shiites of Ali.

And after Ali was killed while he was there to pray in the mosque, Hasan became the ruler of Muslims, but Muawiya opposed him also in order to come into power. Later, Muawiya founded his dynasty which would be called with the name of his ancestor, Umayyad, Dynasty. And Umayyad Dynasty, is mentioned in sunni and shiite sources as "the cursed tree" and "the biting (tyrant) kingship". And the religious figures, such as Hussain (who is accepted by sunnis and shiites) revolted against Umayyad Empire, but they could not succeed.

In summary, the term sunni did not exist back then. Neither did the Umayyads claim to be sunnis. And sunni muslims do not approve the Ummayyad Empire, or their oppressor rulers, except Umar bin Abdal Aziz who abolished some Umayyad traditions.
