England's King Henry VII, in 1492, passed up the chance to have Christopher Columbus claim the Americas for Great Britain. During this period, exploration for a sea route to Asia was forming what became known as "The Age of Exploration." Domestic problems at home prevented the Crown from financing Columbus and his exploration, but England's claim to the Americas was almost as old as Spain's. In 1497, Henry sent John Cabot across the Atlantic to find a sea route to Asia. He touched on the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and claimed the land for King Henry VII. This became the basis for England's claim to North America. It was not by treaty, but by the act of planting the English flag on the coast and claiming all the land for England, that the nation obtained North America. Of course, the claim had to be backed up with colonization and control over the area. The age of Elizabeth I saw more exploration and colonization of North America. While all the land claimed belonged to the King/Queen, the settlement of colonies was carried out by joint stock companies, given permission in the form of charters, who were able to raise the funds to outfit colonial adventures. The early successful colonies were those that were established in areas that could produce the Natural Resources that England desired. NO they were not. The first Europeans to come to that part of North America simply cliamed the land, with no consideration of the rights of the First Nations peoples. The Europeans of that time considered themselves to be superiour and treated the First Nations peoples like children to be ignored or bribed to give their land away. Any treaties that were entered into were soon broken by the Europeans.
