Many wishing to seek an education with a religious context give serious thought to the many bible colleges around the country, but attendance seems to hinge primarily upon the same factor that influences application rates at other institutes of higher learning: employment and/or post-graduate transfer options. Simply put, some institutes of higher learning have a better reputation than others, and many prospective students and their families worry that bible colleges have a negative reputation amongst employers. This may not actually be the case, at least not in all situations.
Any post-graduate concerns are probably not worth losing sleep over, as the application process for most institutes lends little credence to which accredited institute granted the applicant his or her bachelor’s degree. The exception to this rule would be masters programs at highly sought after universities that have the luxury of turning away the majority of applicants each year.
Employment within the United States may not be severely handicapped by a degree from one of the many bible colleges, unless the employer is looking for employees that can handle international work. Simply put, some regions of the world frown on religion in the workplace, especially China. There may also be some concern over religious tones and influence within an office in other countries, even here in the United States, but that fear is usually not a decision making factor for companies with a multi-interview hiring process and a lot of structure.
Most potential employers will be more interested in the candidate and the quality of the education provided by The Bible college the applicant attended rather than the fact that the school taught religion and/or from a certain point of view. Sadly, there are not too many top-tier bible colleges around the nation. If the choice is between Harvard and a non-ranked bible college, then Harvard would probably be the way to go from the standpoint of employment, so long as money was not an issue. Money is an issue in most cases, and it is worth noting that many bible colleges are surprisingly affordable. If the alternative is a two-year community college education or a four year degree from an accredited bible college, take the latter option in all cases.
