Taking into consideration the industrial revolution era of a time between 1700 to 1900, three weapons come to mind that affect the warfare of today.

One was the Gatling gun invented in 1862. This was the first type of machine gun. This type of weapon is still in use today, with high technical improvements. The basic idea and invention, however, affects modern day military operations.

Also, during the US Civil War, the Confederacy had the first submarine. Unsuccessful ones were built as early as 1861, but the first successful one the Hunley, was built in 1864 and succeeded in sinking a Union ship.

Another invention was the Union's USS Monitor. This was the invention of John Ericsson. This warship featured a revolving turret on which a canon was mounted. Currently, turrets on modern day tanks use this same principle.

The idea of an ironclad warship came into being during the industrial revolution. Of course all warships of today are made of various metals.
