That particular westernfield rifle was made by Marlin. Years ago, Montgomery-Ward wanted to sell quality firearms without having to pay for a brand name, so they struck a deal with marlin that they would make the rifles for them to sell but the name would be different. Marlin stopped production of the westernfield in the 70s.

I recently bought a late 60's Western Field Model 740-A-EMN in mint condition for $275. The rifle was manufactured by Marlin with slight modification of their Model 336 there a few cosmetic differences in particular the sites. Otherwise the operation mechanism seems identical.
Millions made.

A marlin lever action 30-30 rifle can hold fife shells in the magazine and one in the chamber.
Browning has made centerfire lever action rifles in various calibers over the decades.
11/18/05 I just purchased a nice little western field 30-30 that is about 85%, No rust, no pits. It is used but not abused for 160.00- The research I did says it was manufactured in 1966 - I expect to pass it on to my kids. Good Luck
Don't even think about it. You can do a fine enough job without taking it apart. Approx. every 1000 rounds pay a retired Winchester engineer for a detail strip.
