From what i can recall... it was becoming one of the first African-American Governors, and the very first African-American President.
Because the United States is such an influential country, the American president is always remembered during his presidency. Thus, Barack Obama is remembered because his policies and his viewpoints affect not just the United States but the world community. Some presidents are not remembered after they leave office, however. It remains to be seen whether Mr. Obama will only be remembered as the first black president, or if he will be remembered for other things as well.
