Atheism is not a religion, and cannot be "practiced." It is a single stance on a single issue. It is simply the absence of belief in gods. There are European countries which have a large majority of atheists.
According to Wikipedia, the five most secular (non-theist) European countries are Estonia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
Atheism is everywhere in modern society. There is no country in the world where atheists can not be found. In some European countries it is reported that more than half the population hold no religious beliefs. Atheism is less common in poor, emerging nations where some still hold on to ancient traditional beliefs, while others follow Christian missionaries who assert that atheism is not an option in a civilised country.
Atheism is not a religion. It is a lack of one. And, to my knowledge, there are countries with no official religion, but not countries with atheism as their standard 'religion' or lack thereof. In Stalin's reign during WWII, atheism was considered to be the only acceptable belief, but there is not much else other than that.
Under some dictatorships "atheism" is what is expected by the Communist regime eg: Russia before glasnost
Yes Atheism would be a sin.AdditionWorse yet in many Islamic countries apostasy carries the penalty of death.
It depends on the government in question and it also depends on how you define "recognized".In some countries, atheism is the state religion, such as has been in China, Communist Albania (1946-1991), and the Soviet Union (1924-1991). Professing atheism in these countries actually confers a political advantage to the adherents. In some countries, atheism is recognized as a religion for purposes of national religious surveys, but conveys no benefits nor causes problems. Countries that operate in this manner include Australia, France, and Japan. In some countries, atheism is considered a religion to the degree where religious rights are concerned, but does not recognize them as a religion where taxation law is concerned. The United States operates in this paradigm. In many countries, atheism is not recognized by the government and Atheists are simply considered to have the religion of their non-Atheist family members. Some such countries tolerate atheists, such as India. Most of these countries do not tolerate atheism and see it negatively, like most Islamic World countries.
Atheism is the absence of belief in gods, so it isn't particularly related to democracy - although atheism was illegal in many countries in Europe before they were democracies.
Jews practice Judaism wherever they live. In all other countries besides Israel, Jews are a minority; with large Jewish communities in America, Britain, Canada, France, and lesser numbers in other western European countries.

Certainly! The European "Dark Ages," and some Arab countries today that practice Sharia Law.

Atheism is not practiced anywhere. It is not a practice. It should not be viewed in religious terms. Atheism is the lack of, or the absence of belief in gods and that can happen anywhere in the world.Think of it this way- not playing golf is not a different sport. Following that example, atheism is a lack of religion and not a different religion.
The European Union was founded by Western European countries while Eastern European countries were still occupied by the Soviet Union.
