Abraham Lincoln was a captain in the Illinois militia before the war. Jefferson Davis attended the United States Military Academy or West Point starting in late 1824. After he graduated, Second Lieutenant Davis was assigned to the 1st Infantry Regiment and was stationed at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin Territory.
