South Carolina on April 12, 1861 they attacked Ft. Sumter in Charleston harbor that was a union site. The southern states thought that Lincoln would declare slavery illegal and they felt they had the right to decide the issue for themselves. It was a States rights issue.

South Carolina was the first US state to ever secede from the US. The leaders of the state believed that the election of President-elect Lincoln would be a threat to their state and to all of its values, including the institution of slavery. South Carolina declared its "freedom" in December of 1860.
