The dictator was an extraordinary magistrate (office of state) appointed by the senate through a decree it issued by the senate when there was an emergency. His term of office was 6 months and was restricted to dealing with the emergency and his remit was defined by the senate. Dictators were given virtually unlimited powers, but they exercised them with caution. When Rome's domination extended beyond Italy the office was discontinued for fear that a dictator who was far away from Rome could use his enormous power for personal gain. Instead, the senate issued an emergency decree which allowed the consuls to act as they saw fit without their usual constitutional constraints. In 82 BC Sulla was appointed dictator when he won his war against Marius and executed thousands of opponents. This gave the Dictatorship a bad name. In 53 BC Pompey was appointed sole consul instead of the dictatorship to deal with domestic unrest because of fears about Sulla's precedent.

When did Caesar become ruler of Rome?

Caesar was appointed dictator four times. The first was in 49 BC and he was reappointed in 48 BC. In 46 BC he was appointed dictator for ten years. Here is where a little confusion enters, in 45 BC he was appointed dictator for life, while in 44 BC he was appointed perpetual dictator. These last two appointments seem to be the same thing with different names.Caesar was appointed dictator four times. The first was in 49 BC and he was reappointed in 48 BC.
