He assumed the chancellorship- which became a Dictatorship- in Germany. An interesting fact is that Hitler maintianed FOUR different chancelleries ( like federal office buildings) in Berlin, dealing with different aspects of the Government- each had an independent chairman or director. Phillipp Bohler or Bueler headed one important branch office. Imagine four White Houses in Washington!

The re-occupation of the Rhineland, an area that had been demilitarized after World War I. The re-occupation of the Rhineland was a clear violation of the Treaty of Versailles. The French and British Armies should have attacked Germany for this, and brought the German chancellor to trial for war crimes; had they done so, the war would have been over in about 6 weeks, with a few thousand dead.

By permitting Hitler's reoccupation of the Rhineland in '36, and his annexation of his invasion of Austria, Germany in early 1938, the Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia), in late 1938, the Germans bought enough time to prepare for the invasions of France, Scandinavia, Poland, Russia, and Africa. The total death toll is unknown, but certainly above 50 million dead.
