Contrary to popular belief, the Aztec people knew Spanish conquistadors were not gods, but men with higher technology and weapons, including iron armor, swords, muskets, cannons and horses. It is as if today a spaceship landed in central park (NYC), with aliens "peacefully" greeting the populace, but displaying energy weapons and force shields.
The Aztecs received them as guests at their capital city of Tenochtitlan, wondering what were their actual intentions. On June 30, 1520 they showed their true colors: fearing an attack by the Aztecs, Pedro de Alvarado ordered a preemptive slaughter of noblemen and priests on the city's main temple (known as The Massacre at the Main Temple), starting what would eventually become the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.
