Italy controlled the Mediterranean Sea, and at that time, the easiest and most reasonable way to reach Asia was by sailing through the Mediterranean. If you were non-Italian, you were more than likely charged by the Italians to travel through the sea to trade. Here, the Italians profited and they also were great trading partners with Asia themselves. They were also a middle man for trade between other European countries and Asia; the European countries came to them for trade items from Asia.

Europe, africa, and asia
Italy is in Europe. Africa is across the Mediterranean Sea south of Italy, and Asia is near Italy to the east.
The Mediterranean sea, and Atlantic and Indian oceans provided trade routes between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Italy was not a united country. City-states like Genoa and Venice controlled much of the trade to Asia.
