In Michigan, a child 4 years of age may ride in the front seat of a vehicle if all other seats are taken by children under the age of 4. A rear-facing car seat can be placed in the front seat if the airbag is turned off.
A child can travel in the front seat at any age, but a booster seat must be used until the child reaches 12 years old or 135cm tall (whichever comes first).
Although it is not illegal, a rear facing booster seat should never be used in the front seat as the child will likely die if the air bags deploy.
you should be 9
If the car does not have air bags, then a child can sit in the front at any age, but must us a booster seat until they weigh at least 80lbs. If your car has passenger side air bags, then it not recommended for them to sit in the front seat until after they turn 13.
what is the weight and height limit to sit in the front seat of a car?
If you have a child in the front seat of a car, you must ensure they are wearing a seat belt and that the airbag is connected. An unrestrained child without an airbag will be flung through the windshield in a crash and will die.The only exception to this is if you've got a baby in a rear-facing car seat strapped to the passenger seat. The baby seat must, without exception, be attached to the seat solidly, or the seat must be strapped to the seat in an approved manner. Then the airbag must be disconnected to prevent crush injuries in a crash.Urban myths have spread about airbags being dangerous. They are not, but not using a seatbelt is very dangerous; not using a seatbelt for your child is wanton neglect. For best results, strap your child into a car seat, fitted by professionals, on the rear seat of your car.
If you consult the buckleupnc.org website, the recommendation is to keep your child in the back seat as long as possible. Children under 5 should always be in the backseat...but then it gets a little fuzzy. The recommendation is that children 1-12 should sit in rear seats whenever possible. My understanding is that once your child is age 12, they are usually tall enough to withstand the effect of an airbag deploying at 150-200 mph. FYI, over half the deaths caused by airbag deployment have been in children sitting in the front passenger seat.

It is not height but weight that determines when you can sit in the front seat.
Laws on age/weight requirements for front seat passengers vary by state. However, a general rule is that front seat passengers should be over the age of 12 and over 80 pounds. However, keep in mind that when driving with children, the back seat is always safer.
