At the age they can earn a cell phone. Whatever the age, forcing the kid to earn the privilege of a cell phone will help them understand that such things are not automatic and carry a real financial cost.

If you want a younger child to have a cell phone, then have the child earn a percentage of the cost so that the money they have to earn gets higher if their bill goes higher. ---- I think 11 is too young. But, if you decide to give the child a phone you MUST put rules in place and enforce them. Be aware that as soon as you give the child the phone, they'll be on it constantly, if not by voice, then by text. And, this will cost you dearly. Many cell phone providers now offer solutions for parents that can limit minutes and texts for kids. That might help. Personally, I suggest: the phone gets turned off as soon as they're home; the phone is only to be used for emergencies and contacting parents (you); NO picture messages; and, most importantly, you need to monitor their usage either online or check the phone usage history at night. ---- i am a parent and my children keep on asking me at what age are they getting a phone. i say dont ask and maybe you'll get one. i think the right time to give your child a phone is when they start middle school, or at the age of twelve. at middle school cause something bad will happen to them. and sometimes the people in the school dont care their head hurts. some parents say they could just use their friends phone but some of their friends dont let them. so i got my child a phone at the age of twelve.

Well i'm 11 and I feel left out when i'm with my friends and then all of them start texting. I think most 11 year olds are responsible enough to have a phone(especially) the ones who are rarley with their parents.

at the ages of 11 through 13

It depends on the situation. Nowadays, there are already a number of kids who are as young as eight-year-old that are given by their parents a cell phone simply because it is a need. It can be noted that these days, cell phones do not only work for calling and texting but as well as for getting an immediate help in times of emergency. There are simple cell phones these days that are equipped with PERS features to help enhance the safety of phone users, especially of children and elderly.

How young is too young for a cell phone?

You should give your child a cell phone that can only call Mom & Dad and 911 to prevent them from misusing it, or their friends sending them inappropriate texts or pictures. Most cell phone companies have these special phones to protect your children. In terms of when you should give your child the phone, with the special phone I have discussed above, you could give your child a phone at a very young age, perhaps 3rd grade. I think it kind of depends on the maturity level of the kid. But when i see elementary school kids with cell phones, i think its riduculous. 3rd grade is WAAAYYY too young to give your child a cell phone. I would say maybe 7th grade or when they turn 13. I'd say 6th grade.

How do you use cell phone school?

Cell phones should be used in school with discipline. This should be turned off whenever a class is going on. As well, parents should set rules for their children to follow whenever they carry their cell phone in school. More importantly, parents should only give their children a simple cell phone with basic features to control their cell phone usage. Giving them a cell phone with advanced features can only tempt them to use the device irresponsibly.

Should tweens and teens have cell pones?

That would depend on the child in my opintion. For some it may just be a hinderance and cause more of a problem than a solution but in most cases I believe that it would be fine to give a cell phone from about 13 or 14 up.

Can you file a lawsuit against a school if they take and keep your child's cell phone and your child needs it in an emergency?

That cell phone is private property and they have to return it. They can prohibit anyone from having a cell phone during school hours. And if there really was an emergency I'm sure the Principle and other teachers would help the child to a phone. Just like they did before cell phones existed. It's still very rare it's an actual emergency and the parents can always call the school. Most teachers don't allow it being switched on during class anyway. You might think that. But what if a child is walking home and someone attacks him/her and there cell phone was still in school lock up. Kids should be alowd to have phones on them but on silent, and therfore instead of taking the phone give them a lunch detention. Seriously..

How will kids at school communicate with their parents after a tornado?

You may give an older child a cell phone for emergency situations. You may also want to give emergency contact information to you child's teachers. Do not rely on landlines in such situations, as a tornado will often take down phone and power lines.
