It has a timing belt. Make sure that you replace it ever 60,000 miles. If it snaps on you, that is bad news!
If the timing belt on a 1.6 Astra breaks, it can damage the engine. It is more likely to damage the engine if it is a timing chain, though. A timing chain is made of metal and a timing belt is made of a heavy duty rubber.

being chain driven you dont have any replacement schedule so you only need to replace it if it snaps which the car should be in a state for unreasonable repair on it due to condition and age
The GM 2.2L (not ECOTEC) engine for that model year used a timing chain with a teflon tensioner. As far as I know, it had no belt. However, the tensioners are notorious for failure...they break off and get between the chain and the sprocket, which snaps the chain. When this happens, the valves contact the pistons, bending them. If the engine is starting to sound like a diesel, you should consider having the chain and tensioner replaced.
as long as you don't turn the engine over after the timing chain breaks everything will be fine. when it snaps some valves may stay open, so in turn if you crank the engine a piston could slam into a valve and get damaged.
If the timing belt snaps on a 2.5 Transit diesel, a secondary issue may be valve damage. When the timing of the engine is off, it throws the internal components out of whack.

It's a Chain Driven J18A Suzuki engine Dohc, there is no interval for replacement of the chain but if it starts to rattle the Chain guides want renewing which are easy to source through either your local motor factors or direct from suzuki. This engine has been identified as an "interference type engine" meaning if the chain snaps you stand a high chance of piston to valve damage.
It depends what kind of revs you were doing. If they were high, then it is possible that you could have snapped a crank, or damaged a piston. However if they were low, then there may be no damage at all
