What is a reel mower?

A reel mower is a "old school" you could say "green" evironmentally sound grass cutting push mower. Usually with 2 wheels, bearings and 4 to 5 curved blades (the reel) set in rotation to spin as you push the mower with the "T" Handle. Pro's: good for small yards that are level with little weeds, no gas and oil to buy, good for evironment. Con's: does not cut grass with different lengths well (weeds and crabgrass that sprouts up unevenly may be difficult for this mower). Does not cut up hill well do due momentum of pushing determines speed at which reel spins. The first time I heard the term "REEL", I thought they where trying to tell me It was a Real mower not a fake one lol.

How you know when to change lawn mower blades?

Not necessarily when to change; but when to sharpen mower blades: The easiest way to know is by observing the way the grass is cut. A sharp blade will make a "clean cut" on the grass blades, whereas a dull blade will "tear" the grass and leave a "ragged" appearance. As far as when to change out the blades, there is no set time interval, you just have to visually evaluate the condition of the blade (bent, badly worn, warped, etc.) to determine when to change. If your mower uses 2 blades, it would be wise to change both blades at the same time.

How do you sharpen reel-to-reel mower blades?

== == you can either remove the reel or leave it on the mower, use a #2 bastard flat file, file the blade on the top edge of the blade You can follow typical manufacturer's recommendation which is to "backlap." There is at least 1 commercially branded backlapping kit on the market for sharpening the mowers. It is not intuitive and internet-posted assistance on the subject is pretty limited. Backlapping paste is like liquid sandpaper, the grit is suspended in a sticky non toxic substance. I think the commercial kit is 80 grit. The kit comes with enough paste to do 1 or 2 sharpenings. You can also check with a hardware store that has been around for awhile, to ask if they know someone locally who does it. I sharpen them in NW Ohio. I use a range of grits down to 220 grit.

Why are the blades on your riding lawn mower not turning?

If the engine is running properly and the blades are not working there are a couple things that could be causing it. 1) The cable or linkage that operates the pulley to engage the blades is broken or bent. 2) One of the pulleys are bad. 3) The belt is broken. #3 would be the most common problem.

Poulan pro riding mower cuts uneven?

Park the mower on level ground and (1) check the air pressure of the tires (use a gauge for correct readings) and inflate to correct psi. (2) with a ruler, measure the distance of the mower deck to the ground in an X pattern and adjust as necessary. (3) raise the mower and inspect the blades to ensure there is no damage (bent, etc.)

Why does my Murray 12hp 38 inch cut riding mower leave patches of unmowed grass behind?

One of several reasons: (1) the blades need sharpening; (2) you are trying to mow at a higher speed than is required; (3) one or both blades are installed upside down; (4)one or both blades are bent. My best guess is (1) and/or (2).

Can you use motor oil in push mower?

If it is a 4-cycle engine you definitely need motor oil. If its a 2-cycle engine then the oil is mixed with the gas. If its a reel mower then no oil is needed except for external lubrication. Depending on the engine manufacturer the 4-cycle engines will require either SAE30 or 10w30 motor oil.
