Praise Be to Allah, Mecca or Makkah (called Mecca in older texts (officially: Makkah al-Mukarramah; Arabic: مكة المكرمة‎) is a city in Saudi Arabia. And in the city is a Masjid (place of prayer) called Masjid Al Harram (The Sacred Mosque) And Medina (Arabic:المدينة المنور Madinah; officially al Madīna al Munawwarah) is a city in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It is the capital of Al Madinah Province. It is the second holiest city in Islam, and the burial place of its prophet, Muhammad. And Al-Aqsa Mosque ("The Farthest Mosque") is a mosque, or a place where Muslims go to worship and it is in Jerusalem. Abdul Malik ibn Marwan asked for the mosque to be built, but he died before they finished building it, and it was finished by his son in 705 AD. It is the third holiest sight in Islam. Islam sees the entire world as a holy place in which worship can occur (with the exception of certain indoor spaces like bathrooms which are not clean or dry). However, there are certain places of additional holiness to which Muslims go to amplify the strength of their prayers or to feel closer to God.

The three biggest holy places are:

  1. The Masjid al-Haram or Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in which sits the Ka'aba or Black Cube. Muslims are required, if financially able, to visit the Ka'aba once in their lives in the pilgrimage known as the Hajj. The largest congregational open prayers are done in Mecca and Medina during the Hajj. Refer to related question below on how to perform the Hajj.
  2. The Masjid al-Nabawi or the Prophet's Mosque in Medina/Yethrib, Saudi Arabia. (The city is known by both names.) This is supposedly the first mosque in the history of Islam.
  3. The Haram al-Sharif and the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock and the Distant Mosque in Jerusalem, Israel/Palestine. This is supposedly the place where Mohammed ascended to heaven.

Additionally, there are famous mosques which hold great prestige or value such as the Jame'a Bani Umayya al-Kabir or the Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria or the Jame'a Al-Azhar or Flower Mosque in Cairo, Egypt. There are also special mosques that are significant primarily to only Shiites such as Abbas Mosque, in Karbala, Iraq. These are called The "Ahl Al-Bayt".

Finally, the tombs of Sufi saints are also seen as limited holy places to Muslims and there are some towns, like Moulay Idriss, Morocco which have become sanctified due to the burial of an Islamic Saint.

Why do people often ask about Islamic terrorism?

Simply put, while people certainly do ask about other forms of terrorism in addition to Islamic terrorism, people ask about Islamic terrorism for several major reasons: (1) its relative commonness, (2) the amount of media coverage given to Islamic terrorism, (3) a curiosity to understand the enemy, (4) selective attention making Muslims feel more under attack (Muslims typically are not reading questions about Hindu Terrorism), and (5) a general annoyance that most Muslims do not say anything useful concerning terrorism or why it occurs in Islam. They often prefer to use tu quoque logical fallacies (which is the fallacy of "you are just a bad as us"), no true Scotsman logical fallacies (which is the fallacy or "they are not 'real' Muslims"), and arguments that "non-Muslims just do not understand" while not explaining anything that would actually provide such understanding.
