The biggest, in my view, is religion. Modern Christianity is derived from the Romans as both the Catholic and the Orthodox creeds are religions which developed in the Roman Empire. Catholicism (at the time it was called Latin or Western Christianity) was the religion of the western part of the Roman Empire. The Orthodox Church (at the time it was called Greek or eastern Christianity) was the religion of the eastern part of the Roman Empire

Language. We derive many English words from the Latin language. They entered the English language via two routes. One was Latin being the language of the church in the Middle Ages. The other was the Norman Conquest. French became the language of the court and many French words entered the English language. Many of these French words are derived from Latin.

The key concepts of Roman civil law have provided the basis or an inspiration for the law of many modern countries, including the US. These are: citizenship status and citizenship rights, equality under the law, the right to have a proper trial and to defend oneself, the right to appeal, that the burden of proof rests on the accuser and not on the accused, that it is the exact form of actions and not intentions or words which is punishable, that a law deemed unreasonable or unfair can be repealed, and that no citizen should be tortured.
