One theory that supports plate tectonics is that coal mines match up EXACTLY in North America. another is that mountains on the east coast of south americaa match up with those on the west coast of Africa.

  1. The shapes of many continents are such that they look like they are separated pieces of a jig-saw puzzle. For example, look in the adjacent map at the shape of the east coast of North and South Americal relative to the shape of the west coast of Africa and Europe.
  2. Many fossil comparisons along the edges of continents that look like they fit together suggest species similarities that would only make sense if the two continents were joined at some point in the past.
  3. There is a large amount of seismic, volcanic, and geothermal activity along the conjectured plate boundaries. This is shown clearly below in the figure labeled "Crustal plate boundaries" where the epicenters of earthquakes above Richter magnitude 5.0 are plotted for a 10-year period. The concentration is striking, and indeed this plot serves to define the plate boundaries extremely well. Here is aclickable map of current volcanic activity on Earth.
  4. There are ridges, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (see figures above and below) where plates are separating that are produced by lava welling up from between the plates as they pull apart. Likewise, there are mountain ranges being formed where plates are pushing against each other (e.g., the Himalayas, which are still growing).

Some of the best evidence for the theory of plate tectonic are earthquakes, plants that are in different continents across the ocean,or mountains.

Which 2 continents fit together the best?

South America and Africa are often considered to fit together well due to their similar shapes along the Atlantic Ocean coastlines. This observation was one of the key pieces of evidence used to support the theory of plate tectonics and the concept of continental drift.

Who was harry hess and what did he theorize?

Considered one of the "founding fathers" of the unifying theory of plate tectonics, Rear Admiral Harry Hammond Hess was born on May 24, 1906 in New York City. He is best known for his theories on sea floor spreading, specifically work on relationships between island arcs, seafloor gravity anomalies, and serpentinized peridotite, suggesting that the convection of the Earth's mantle was the driving force behind this process. This work provided a conceptual base for the development of the theory of plate tectonics.

Were do most continents fit together the best?

Most continents fit together the best along their coastlines, such as the east coast of South America aligning with the west coast of Africa. This alignment is evidence of the theory of plate tectonics, where continents were once joined together in a single landmass called Pangaea.

What evidence would you look for if you wanted to show two landmasses were once connected?

The best example for this would be South America and Africa. If you put them together its like two jigsaw pieces coming together. It took millions of years for Africa and South America to seperate from each other. If you look on a map and just visually push these two continents together they fit each other quite nicely. The theory of Plate Tectonics is about how the continents move around on the surface of the earth. Using South America and Africa as an example one can see how Plate tectonics has occurred. Also the continents never stop moving. More information on the link provided below.
