The bongo drums were used in many African tribes (although they were used in many other parts of the world) because they were small, portable, easy to make. They were used for entertainment or for spiritual rituals.
The Ngoma, which originated in the Eastern part of Africa, is also known as the Drum of the Dead due to its relation to indigenous royal ancestor spirits. It is used during many celebrations, is a symbol of authority, and is a means of communication within tribes.

Exactly what you referred to them as: drums. In reality, however, you can't call all african drums by one name.....otherwise they would all be the exact same drum haha! Just to give you an idea, here are some of the different types of African Drums: Djembe Talking Drum Bata Bougarabou Ngoma Check out videos and recordings of the different types and you'll realize how unique each drum is!
