The Pomeranian is a cocky, animated companion with an extroverted personality. This compact little dog is an active toy breed with an alert character and fox-like expression. Today, the Pomeranian is a popular companion dog and competitive show dog. They can come in all colors, patterns, and variations although orange and red are the most popular.
A Look Back
The breed's name originally came from the historical region of Pomerania (now present day Germany and Poland). Originally weighing nearly 30 pounds, the dog served as an able herder of sheep in its larger form. They were not well known until 1870, when the Kennel Club (England) recognized the so-called Spitz dog. In 1888, Queen Victoria fell in love with a Pomeranian in Florence, Italy, and brought the specimen back to England, influencing its popularity dramatically.
Right Breed for You?
Pomeranians are very intelligent dogs that love to please. Because of their outgoing temperaments, they can be very good family dogs with the right training. Due to their small size they don't require much exercise, but are an energetic breed that needs attention from their people frequently. They possess a thick double coat, which needs to be brushed on a regular basis.
reference from the American Kennel Club
They are an type of dog. They are extremely fluffy and an wide opion that they are utterly adorable!
An annoying one.
* WRONG. Pomeranians are considered a toy breed because of their smaller size. My pom is a happy, light-hearted dog with a great temperament. She's very intelligent and is the dominant dog of my pair of dogs (I also have a Weimaraner). The grooming required is extensive because they are double-coated, so don't get a pom if you don't want to have to brush your dog or take it to the groomer.
Very Good!
They yap a bit, but are good dogs.
Most of them have ashma problems, and will hack, and will sound like they are vomiting, but vomiting is very rare. They will vomit usually if they ate to much of something. They need daily grooming, but don't have to excerise as much as other dogs. But you do need to walk them at least twice a week. A good owner would walk them once or twice a day, because they can have a lot of energy, depending on the dog. Male poms tend to put up with more than females. Females yap more and bark more and are more skittish. Mine is a black medium male. They are semi easy to train, and our good family dogs. They are lap dogs, but can have bath room trouble. If you have a open yard and take them out to the bathroom, they may make a run for it. Mine does all the time.
All in all, pomerainians are good pets.
But if you plan on getting one, make sure you research them. They may not be good pets to you!
