what is "importance" of these? It helps society understand what is most important, and set their actions or laws in accordace with those "fundamentals." There is an old saying about "you cannot get there, if you don't know where you're going." We must always protect our fundamental rights. If not, we no longer have the values and goals OF our our ancestors. We become a "different" people, perhaps much less good, when we do not defend things like freedom and liberty FOR ALL.

The framers of the constitution set out to ensure that the people of the United States of America would have freedom, not just for a short time, but in perpetuity. They worked on balancing the powers so that no one corrupt person could rob the country of the freedoms that they guaranteed, and they tried as well as they could to make it so that corruption couldn't take over, or one interest group, no matter how strong, couldn't remove the rights or freedoms of another.
The colonists required the ratification process because they wanted the Bill of Rights to be included in the US Constitution. With the addition of the Bill of Rights more colonists could set aside their fears of having their rights and freedoms taken away from them by the government.
Your rights are guaranteed under the Constitution of the United States. However, certain behaviors that one may choose to be involved in can "strip" that individual of his/her rights. Your fundamental rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness can be stripped if your action violate laws set in place by the government. This also extends to the right to vote, bear arms etc.
