Rhode Island was famous for having the first manufacturing company in the United States, a textile mill built by Samuel Slater. It is the state which had the most pirates, sailing out of Newport. It was called, "Rogue's Island" by citizens of nearby Massachusetts because so many people were smugglers, tax-evaders, pirates and engaged in other inappropriate behaviors. It is famous because the cannons on the U.S.S. Constitution were forged in Rhode Island. A Rhode Island battery of artillery helped to win the Battle of Gettysburg. Rhode Island was the home of the first Baptist Church, initiated by Roger Williams. It was the first state to welcome people of all religions. It is full of Italians, which is in itself an excellent thing. It had the largest city besides Philadelphia during the 18th century--Newport. It has a marvelous collection of colonial-era homes, notably in Wickford, Providence and Newport, but also in Bristol and elsewhere. It was famous for textile manufacturing and jewelry manufacturing up to the mid-20th century. Eli Whitney, Edgar Allen Poe, the Brown family (Brown University), Roger Williams, and me, are all famous people with ties to Rhode Island. When Verrazano explored the east coast of America, he remarked that the natives in the Narragansett Bay area were the handsomest and healthiest of all the tribal people he encountered. The Narragansett Indian Tribe was the dominant tribe in southern New England for a long time, and other tribes known to the Pilgrims paid homage to them. It is famous because Rhode Island tax-evaders (smugglers) burned a British patrol ship in Narragansett Bay well before the Boston Tea Party, and they tarred and feathered the British customs official in Providence to protest taxation.

The statue on the top of the State House dome is "Independent Man." Rhode Islanders are independent people and do not behave in such as subservient manner as many people seem to in other states. They drive however they want too, the pizza and other foods are superior to almost everywhere else, and they have some of the best beaches anywhere. There is a lot of forest outside the cities, more now than in 1720 when the land had been cleared for farms. It is a beautiful state outside the inner cities. There are lots of other facts that make RI interesting and either notorious or popular, but it would take too long to list them.
