There are some cultures that believe butterflies are inhabited by the souls of those who can not enter the after-life (heaven), others believe they are the souls of unborn children.
I have heard it said that seeing three butterflies together at one time is an omen of ill fortune. In England seeing a butterfly at night is an omen of a coming death. In some areas the first butterflies of spring were hunted down and killed to preserve the luck of the area. And at one time in Scotland witches were believed to be able to change into red butterflies.
Some bad superstitions about butterflies include associating them with death, believing that killing a butterfly brings bad luck, or considering them to be omens of impending misfortune. These superstitions lack scientific evidence and can lead to negative perceptions of these beautiful creatures.
- Three butterflies together is a sign of good luck. - If the first butterfly you see in a year is white, you will have good luck throughout the year.

Superstitions are not based in science. There might be a logical reason like breaking a mirror is bad luck but does not cause bad luck but this is not scientific.

Butterflies are not bad for the environment. They help to pollinate, they eat bugs and rotting fruits, and provide enjoyment.

butterflies and moths
There are many superstitions regarding animals. Butterflies are no exception. However, there is absolutely not single shred of evidence to support any of these superstitions. An insect, randomly encountered does not in any way relate to your bank account. Remember, to believe in something does not make it true.
Superstitions are generally bad because they promote irrational behavior and beliefs that have little or no basis in reality.
A black cat is bad luck. If one crosses your path, it's a bad omen.
