In terms of the development and change of practice of the religion, this can be a touchy subject since many religious people hold that they practice a religion which has been unchanged throughout history. However, Islam through the modern era has had profound changes in theological discourse and application of power that are worth discussing:

Salafism & Wahhabism: One of the major modern trends of Islam is for there to be movements seeking to return to "Original Islam" before the much of interpretive law set down by the Ulema (scholars). The term Salafi comes from Salaf or "Ancestors" and the term Wahhabi comes from Abd el-Wahhab who was a Salafist scholar and founder of the movement. Since Wahhabism is supported by the affluent Saudi Government, the Salafists have been expanding their reach and influence.

Islamism: For the longest period in history, Muslim religious leadership and Muslim political leadership were separated since rulers were generally seen as impious and therefore unable to issue religious rulings. The merger of Mosque & State in regimes like Iran and Saudi Arabia (Islamism) is something that had not occurred since the days of the Rightly-Guided Caliphate.

Liberal Reform: A small portion of the Islamic laity is pursuing the creation of a more liberal Islam in the vein of Reform Judaism, but based on Islamic principles.
