Clay dams are placed around areas in broken metal work to hold fluid metal in the area until it cools. "Not worth a tinker's dam" is a remnant of this as the dried clay dam was worth nothing after use.

Dental dams

These rubber sheets are installed by dentitists to stop tooth bits and such from falling to the back of the patients mouth

Dams are used in places that need to reserve water and they are built along rivers. One of the most famous dams in the United States is Hoover Dam. Many countries have flooded vast areas of land to make dams. Egypt flooded one part of the Nile River to make a dam and also covered many ancient temples in the process. China a few years ago did the same thing. At the head of the Thames into London there is an interesting dam that is built in sections. The reason for this is that the river has high and low tides so the dam can move up or down with the river.

I'm not an expert in this field, but I would say the most important use of a dam is to control the flow of water. By doing this people can flood areas they want to be flooded or keep water out of areas they don't want it. Another use of a dam is to harness power.
