Ricket, scurvy, hepatitis, malaria, halitosis, scabies, and any number od venerial diseases. They got scurvy that was why they walked with their backs bent over and with a cane, they needed an apple a day to keep the doctor away-apples provided the nutrients that were essential for proper bones. Currently books on pirates are populaer-I'm writting one. One interesting disease that pirates sometime suuffered from was psittacosis, also known as parrot fever. It is a disease of parrots but can be transferred to humans by the inhalation of dust from dried parrot dung. Infected humans suffer from extremely high temperature leading to pneumonia and if untreated coma and death. And is also so deadly you only get this in hot places.
Pirates suffered from many diseases, especially ones that were related to dietary deficiencies. But the one they are most famous for getting is Scurvy. Scurvy occurs when you have a lack of vitamin C. It causes loosening of the cartilage in your body and causes bleeding from the mucous membranes.
While it may not be the most common condition amongst them, sailor's often contracted scurvy, a disease resulting from a deficiency of vitamin C. Vitamin C is found primarily in fruits and vegetables, some including; lemons, grapefruit, tomatoes, bell peppers and Oranges. Food was a problem at sea because it would spoil very quickly. At the beginning of a voyage, a ship carried many fruits and vegetables, but they would rot if the crew did not eat them soon enough. Officers and captains had pick of the best food and so often times they would be spared from the effects of scurvy. Symptoms included gradual weakening, pale skin, sunken eyes, tender gums, muscle pain
, loss of teeth, internal bleeding, and sometimes the opening of wounds such as sword cuts that had healed many years before. Exhaustion, fainting, diarrhea, and lung and kidney
trouble followed.
Scurvy is a disease resulting from a deficiency of vitamin C, which is required for the synthesis of collagen in humans. The chemical name for vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is derived from the Latin name of scurvy, scorbutus. Scurvy leads to the formation of spots on the skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from the mucous membranes. The spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. In advanced scurvy there are open, suppurating wounds and loss of teeth.
