Some successes where the collaboration and knowledge extracted from the native Americans that lived there, and the investment in growing tobacco crops.
Some failures where their inability for the first colonies to have work ethic. a lot of the first colonists were noblemen and had no real work ethic and as the biblical saying goes you reap what you sow or in this case you can't eat what you don't sow. (Ie they were lazy and didn't really make adequate shelter, or try to acquire adequate farming or hunting skills at first.)
Tobacco. The English used tobacco much like we have coffee today. The Virginia Colony was a good place to grow tobacco so it became a cash crop. A cash crop is a crop grown and sold for a profit.
The number one reason was the introduction of tobacco by John Rolfe. To the colonist the the Native Americans unfenced land looked unused. It doesn't matter that it was unused so it could be kept open by burning and used for hunting and gathering parties. The English cleared the "vacant" land to plant tobacco, but instead of abandoning fields as they were depleted they put in cattle and horses. Rather than cycling the land between farm and forest they divided it into parcels and kept them in continual use. This kept prime farm and forage land away from the Native Americans pushing them further and further away. Tobacco fueled the addiction for more and more land. The Native Americans had grown it, but only in small amounts, but the English covered large acres of land with tobacco. This caused a constant wearing out of the land meaning the more forest was cleared leaving behind sparse pastureland. Added to all this the English also brought in pigs, goats, cattle, and horses that roamed the area. The worse was the pigs that ate everything and the Natives found themselves competing for food with packs of pigs. The English also imported bees for honey and they pollinated farms and orchards up and down the East Coast. Without them GA wouldn't have become the Peach State and Johnny Appleseed's trees might not have given fruit or there would not have been watermelons. So critical was the honey bee to the English that the Native Americans began to see it as a harbinger of invasion. The combination of all of these things made Jamestown and the colonies that followed successful.
They had great trade with indians and back to england as an advantage to the success. Also jamestown had a great defence factor being there was swamps and a river around them so it was hard for spanish of indian attacks. finnally they had a great fort plan of a triangle for the best field of view. they had very knowledged people and great layout of the settlement.

Virginia Colony.
Private ownership of lots and produce made Jamestown turn from starving disaster to a healthy successful little colony. For six years Jamestown struggled under communal labor and property laws. Finally in 1613 Governor Dale assigned 3-acre plots to the original arrivals and and smaller plots to later arrivals. Very quickly production went up, plantings expanded, relations with the Indians improved and Virginia became a way better place.
